Introduction to Computer Programming with Python
WinRec / Blackrock Networks, Inc. will be offering an Introduction to Computer Programming class again for 4th and 5th graders in the Fall of 2017.
*This is the same class that ran at Lynch this past spring
- Location: Lynch School Library, Winchester MA
- Day: Thursday 3:10 pm – 4:10 pm (Sept 21st - Jan 11th)
- Duration: 15 weeks
- Instructor: Blackrock Networks, Inc. / Software Developer
The class will cover the basics of "real" computer programming in Python, an easy to learn language that is used today in many companies. The children will learn how to read, write, and modify basic Python programs. We will learn about variables, loops, if-then-else statements, and functions. Some of the topics we will cover include: how to use Python to draw pictures, how to write a math quiz, how to make secret messages, and how to write simple programs to do cool things in Minecraft. The class is 15 weeks long.
Previous typing experience is very beneficial. Previous programming experience is not expected. The class material is challenging, and is best suited for students who like computers and enjoy problem solving.
There is an additional one time cost of $90+tax to purchase the Raspberry Pi educational computer payable separately to Blackrock Networks, Inc. This includes the cables, keyboard and SD card. The children will use it for their classwork and homework, and will keep it when the class is over. This computer will be provided to them on the first day of class, and they will be required to bring it with them to class each week. For homework, children will need access to a screen / TV that supports HDMI. If you already own a Raspberry Pi 3, you do not need to purchase a new one. Please confirm the version with us prior to class.
